Xmas online shopping to reach £7 billion
Internet shopping was 50% higher last year than 2004 and this year IMRG anticipates that sales will be up 40% on 2005 with UK shoppers spending £7 billion online - or £4 million every hour during the 10-week run-up to Christmas 2006. IMRG estimates that Christmas shopping online will be equivalent to the sales of 30 Bluewater Shopping Centres this year. Verdict Research meanwhile puts fourth quarter online shopping at £3.4 billion, or 4.5% of all Christmas spending. -
E-retailers comment on October sales as industry hits all time high
Internet sales are growing at an ever increasing rate with October's sales reaching the all time high of an estimated £2.73 billion, according to e-retail industry body IMRG. Many retailers experienced above 50% growth over the same month in 2005 - sales at johnlewis.com were up 70%, and 109% year-on-year growth was recorded for lastminute.com's 'unusual gifts'. -
Christmas spend forecast to be highest for 12 years
The amount we each spend on Christmas presents this year is expected to rise by 22% over the amount that UK consumers spent in 2005, according to a survey by business advisers Deloitte. Total spending is forecast to reach £16.9bn - the highest level for 12 years. The £7bn that will be spent online this Christmas (as forecast by IMRG) would account for 41% of this. If these figures turn out to be the reality this Christmas then online retailers will be partying in the new year. -
IMRG-Hitwise Hot Shops List ranks top 50 e-retailers
The quarterly IMRG-Hitwise Hot Shops List has been updated to show the top 50 ranking e-retailers in the UK. Eight new merchants made it into the November Hot Shops List - the fastest riser and a new entrant to both the List and the marketplace, Tesco Direct, streaked in at number 22. -

Lunchtime today will be the hour when consumers spend the most on internet shopping this year, forecasts IMRG, with today marking the start of what is predicted to be the highest grossing week of the year. -

Sales boost poor high street performance
The number of shoppers in the high street in December was down on 2005 but rose by 34.8% over November's footfall, according to Retail Traffic Index figures from retail research group SPSL. The SPSL figures, based on the number of people entering shops, confirm reports in December that shoppers were starting to shop closer to Christmas - partly because many now prefer to do some of their gift searching and early shopping online in good time for guaranteed deliveries. -

Online sales exceeded expectations this Christmas as shoppers worried bricks and mortar-only retailers by flocking to their computers instead of the high street in early December. Total sales taken by internet retailers in the ten-week run-up to Christmas were up 54% on the same period in 2005. -

With the level of Christmas sales online confirmed at £7.66 billion in a market worth £30.2 billion over the whole of 2006, according to IMRG, thoughts are starting to turn to sales figures for 2007 and Christmas 2007 (albeit with trading statements still coming into the media from retailers). -
Toolbar launched to sight and sound enable websites
IMRG, in partnership with Hidden Differences Group, has created a hosted toolbar to help make websites more accessible for shoppers with communication difficulties, disabilities and differences. The toolbar, which contains a suite of accessibility tools to sight and sound enable websites also helps make websites "legally compliant" with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 said IMRG. -
Retailers must try harder
Retail Traffic Index figures from the retail research group SPSL show that the number of shopping trips made in February fell by 1.3% year-on-year and by 9.3% on January. January wasn't the best month for retailers on the high street nor online as figures for internet retailing show a larger than usual drop between December and January. -
Amazon and Argos remain top of the e-retail market
Hitwise and IMRG have updated their list of the top 50 online retailers. The Hot Shops List, based on January 2007 visitor figures, shows 4 new entrants, 22 risers, 21 fallers and 3 retailers retaining their position in the quarterly-produced ranking. -
UK online shopping reaches £100bn
Internet retailing in the UK has reached the £100bn mark, according to the IMRG. It has taken 12 years for shoppers to spend this amount online but internet sales contue to rise. The IMRG Index (which tracks online sales), increased 55% in April, the largest annual rise since December 2003 - and above the 32% year-on-year growth rate recorded over the past 12 months. -
IMRG launches go green, go online campaign
IMRG has launched a Go Green, Go Online campaign to raise awareness of the environmental advantage of shopping online. It has also awarded its first green awards - the OnLine Green Awards (OLGAs). -
80% online growth as July sales hit £4bn
July saw a massive spike in online sales, up 80% on last year, to a new all-time high, according to the IMRG. The IMRG Index burst above 4000 for the first time (4111), indicating that UK e-retail sales had exceeded £4 billion in a month for the first time (£4.2bn). Sales for the month were £1.86 billion higher than in July 2006. -
IMRG-Hitwise Hot Shops List
Argos and Tesco are among the few movers in the ranks of e-commerce companies listed in the latest IMRG-Hitwise Hot Shops List. The two companies have swapped between 2nd and 3rd places in the quarterly listing, behind Amazon's usual position as the most popular site for UK visitors. -
IMRG: "The strike is destroying the industry"
James Roper, the IMRG's CEO, is quoted in the Telegraph as saying of the worst postal strike for 20 years that it "is destroying the industry. Our industry works on confidence and trust of the customers. The Royal Mail is the only doorstep delivery business in the UK."
"The uncertainty that this is bringing into the market place is a nightmare. It is particularly hard for small firms who do not have the means to engage a replacement carrier at short notice."
However, the uncertainty may work in favour of etailers if it brings forward customer orders since they're no longer blase about last minute deliveries.
