US shopping cart abandonment runs at over 50%

A study of US shopping cart abandonment shows that 52.1% of customers who started to make a purchase online changed their mind before completing the order. This figure for 2006 is an improvement on the 59.8% level revealed in 2005, according to MarketingSherpa Research.

The full, 12-minute long presentation is available online if you sign up for a free trial of the US company's service.

The three recommendations for reducing abandonment were:

  • Bill me later.
  • Testing the shopping cart
  • Email customers who have not completed a purchase

  • A synopsis of the presentation is available on Chris Baker's blog.
