January sales should still draw in the shoppers, says Gfk NOP
More consumers plan to make purchases during the January sales than usual — but they each plan to spend less than they did last year
The latest Christmas research from Gfk NOP is indicating that 69% of consumers plan to make purchases during the January sales, up from the usual 64%. But 21% intend to spend less than last year and only 17% plan to spend more.
Nearly three-quarters of women intend to shop during the sales. A higher proportion of men are willing to spend more, though, along with those aged 16 to 24, those on a higher income and those putting their spending on a credit card.
"Indications suggest that while footfall looks as if it will go up, average spend will go down so the net result may be no better than last year," Gfk NOP retail research director Helen Roberts told Retail Week.
