iVillage to get a 'travelling home page'
In a move that redefines the accepted meaning of 'home page' the online information network for women is to get a special navigational panel that follows users round the site...
iVillage, NBC Universal's information network for women, now boasts a 'travelling home page' which will soon also include an embedded video player. The new feature appears as a banner across the top of each page which can be expanded to reveal half a screenful of links to articles and videos.
The travelling home page is designed to help users navigate to further items that will interest them. The site's head of technology, Fraser MacLellan, told New Media Age, "The travelling home page is a great way to showcase content, as well as giving us an insight into the behaviour of users as the clicks via the travelling home page can be tracked to see what visitors want."
We're a little mystified here at IR Towers; the effect seems a little '1996' but there is no doubt that a method to consistently and effectively highlight key offerings is a good idea. You can go and take a look for yourself — the area is just below the masthead and top horizontal navigation. Click on the 'open' button to drop down the travelling home page — and then let us have your opinion. Is it a great idea for improving site stickiness? Or is it just a quick fix for sub-optimal navigation?
