Two developments this week point towards the idea that, rather than cutting back on customer service to keep prices as low as possible, improving the personal element in your offering could be the way to increase sales.

Zazzle, the American retailer that lets customers add a personal touch to everything from shoes to key rings, has expanded into the UK in time for Christmas. Borders, meanwhile, has added a unique personal shopping service that puts online gift buyers in contact with its buyers.

When times are hard, a little lateral thinking might make all the difference.
