Doing e-commerce in Europe
Internet Retailing is going to Paris in a joint initiative with ACSEL (association pour le commerce et les services en ligne) for the launch of one of the first books to look at e-commerce in Europe.
If you’re in Paris on May 15th
you may see Internet Retailing’s
Publisher Ian Jindal speaking at the launch of the book "Europe, an opportunity for e-commerce"
by Jean-Christophe Defline, Associate Director of Copilot Partners
The book chronicles the growth of e-commerce in Europe and looks at some of the home-grown success stories.
Despite it’s late start Europe is now a mature e-commerce market and one of the
biggest markets in the World; with European users now spending over 106 billion
euros online in 2006 which almost matches the US (130 billion euros) and
continues to show very high growth rates and some fast growing territories;
- A mature market concentrated in Northern Europe (with the United Kingdom, Germany and the Scandinavian countries) where 60 to 80% of Internet users are e-shoppers.
- A growing market in France, Italy and in Spain with a ratio of e-shoppers to Internet users the weakest (between 35 and 50% according to markets), but a very strong growth rate amongst new e-shoppers which bodes for excellent potential for the short and long term.
- A budding market represented by Eastern Europe, with different levels of maturity according to the countries and for which statistical data lacks terribly.
2008 and 2009 years will be significant for the development
of e-commerce in Europe: On the eve of
profound changes the book aims to provide an update on this market to provide a
quick overview with its main key figures.
