British shoppers accessed more than 24 million online customer reviews in a single day while doing their Christmas shopping on the web during Cyber Monday, according to Bazaarvoice. This represents a growth of 128% on the same day last year.

Internet shoppers also posed, read or answered in excess of five million questions about products in the run-up to Cyber Monday. Bazaarvoice says it served over 827 million pieces of user-generated content in the UK, such as customer reviews, answers, and stories, in November.

“We are in the last days of the year for online Christmas shopping, and it is exciting to see how many shoppers are referencing the opinions of other customers when finding the perfect gift,” says the firm’s Andy Leaver. “Customer-generated content is becoming more and more ubiquitous throughout the UK, and these figures highlight the growing trust shoppers now place in the opinion of peers.”

  • Customer reviews are increasingly important for online shoppers as consumers rely on other opinions when buying a product they cannot physically see. It is more crucial than ever for site to introduce a user-generated product review capability. This will keep customers on their site and ensure they don’t have a reason to navigate away from their sites when seeking a second opinion, only to purchase a product elsewhere.

However, many ecommerce sites will fail because they have not been developed on the most robust and dynamic platform, so their ability to be evolved and enhanced is limited. Serious ecommerce brands need to understand that a site is a constantly evolving entity, and therefore needs to be created on a platform which makes this ongoing process an achievable one.
