Mobile phone users can now buy Paysafecard voucher codes and bill them to their mobile phone. The voucher codes can then be spent at any of the 2,700 websites that accept Paysafecard payments, without the user having to disclose their financial details.

The Paysafecard Via Mobile system is built on the UK mobile networks’ Payforit standard and is available to customers of Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile and 3 — but not currently Virgin Mobile.

The system, built by BT Agilemedia and mobile billing specialist Dialogue Communications, allows the purchase of £8 vouchers, for which the customer is billed £10 “due to charges incurred in billing your handset for this service”. Customers then receive a voucher code which can be spent at any website that accepts Paysafecard payments. The system works with both post-pay and pre-paid phone accounts, and the £10 transaction limit is a ceiling imposed by the Payforit standard.

“This project has been an innovative example of how to use the Payforit scheme for online purchases,” says BT Agilemedia’s Mike Steel. “The use of frictionless payment methods such as Payforit, provide exciting opportunities for all players in the value chain in the coming months.”
